There are many reasons that people get involved in internet marketing but the two most common that I hear of are:
- To make money online and gain freedom
- Because a hobby website turned into a business
The biggest difference between these two routes into internet marketing are:
The first is a conscious decision to start an online business in order to make money and gain the freedom of doing it from anywhere with an internet connection.
The second is because a website started for fun became bigger than expected to the point where it needed to make money in order to cover the costs of running it.
In my experience it’s the second type of people who are, in broad strokes, the more successful.
Because they started out doing something for fun. They enjoy it.
Without a doubt there are people out there who are motivated enough by money to be successful at something for no other reason.
But I’m not one of them. And in my experience there are far more people like me than not.
Don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of people who think that money is enough motivation for them. But they never succeed to the level they want because… it isn’t.
The bottom line is that 90% of people need to enjoy what they’re doing if they going to run their own business or become freelancers.
Because it’s hard work. And if you don’t enjoy it then you end up wondering why you don’t go back to the easy life of having someone pay you for your seven hours a day after which you can forget about everything and go home.
However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t want to start an internet marketing business because of the money AND do something you enjoy.
It just means that you need to start in a different place to what most “gurus” will tell you.
An internet marketing “guru” will provide you with a strategy to make money. It doesn’t matter whether it’s getting traffic, writing sales copy, optimising conversion, social media or one of the hundreds of areas that can be used to market on the internet.
They sell thousands of copies of their products and 99% of people who buy them don’t succeed because…
…they don’t take action.
You hear it time and again. I bought this product but I haven’t used it yet.
Hell, I’ve done it and you’ve probably done it to.
The question you should be asking yourself is why haven’t you done it?
Is it because you haven’t had time, or the course was so long you got bored?
I would guess that the majority of the time it’s a combination of both.
So, you want to make money online. You may already be making a few hundred dollars a month and unable to make more, or you may be struggling to make your first dime.
It doesn’t matter. You have the skill and ability to be successful. You’re just not focusing on the right thing….
And today is when that changes.
Start by re-assessing the niche that you’re in and ask yourself two questions:
- Is it a niche you know a lot about?
- Do you enjoy it?
The answer to both of these should be yes. If they’re not, then you’re in the wrong niche.
And when I say “know a lot about”, I mean that you need to know more than the average person out there.
You don’t need to be an expert or a guru. You just need to know more than most.
The reason that you MUST say yes to both of these questions is because you’re going to be spending a lot of time working in this niche. So you’d better enjoy it. And you’re going to need to know what the biggest obstacles are. So you need to have been there and got through them to really know.
Ultimately if you’ve been through the obstacles then you’ll know:
- What products to sell
If you enjoy the niche then:
- You’ll pass that enjoyment to your customers and readers
And if you do both of those things, then you’ll have a successful business.
