To blog or not to blog, that is the question

The most common starting point for an online bizniss, is a blog. That’s where I began, and it’s where almost everyone I know began.

If you asked 1000 people what the first thing they should do online, most of them would tell you that the first thing you need is a website and blog.

Now the first part I agree with. You need a website. You need a brand.

But the second part, I disagree with.

You don’t need a blog.

Heck, I wouldn’t even recommend you consider it to begin with. And here’s why:

  1. You need to learn how to build a full website
  2. It takes time to build
  3. You need to learn how to write a lot of content
  4. It takes time to write content
  5. You need to learn how to market that content
  6. It takes time to market content
  7. You need to learn how to make products
  8. It takes time to make products
  9. You need to learn how to sell products
  10. It takes time to learn how to sell products

I’m gonna stop there, because you’re probably seeing a pattern!

If you’re going to blog, then there’s a lot of things to learn before you’re…

  1. Able to start.
  2. Make any money.

Which makes it, for me, one of the worst ways to start an online business.

Starting an online business means you want to:

* Get up and running as soon as possible

* Make money as soon as possible

So here’s the scooby…

If you want to make money online, then you need to sell. This can be hard or soft selling, but the bottom line is… you will have to sell, if that makes you feel uncomfortable, you’d better get over it quick.

It made me uncomfortable for a few years. And guess what? I didn’t start to make money until I got over it.

Once you’ve got over that hurdle, you then need to find the quickest, most direct way to sell. That’s using email.

It’s not debatable, it’s just fact.

So, you need a one-page website which has an optin form to join your email newsletter, in return you give away a free guide, piece of software or something that does not cost you every time you give it away.

Then you need an autoresponder to put those leads into, such as Aweber.

And then… you need to send them an email every day.

That’s it.

The blog, content, social marketing, product creation and copywriting, can all come later. Sell other peoples products, for a commission, to start.

It means you can get up and running very quickly, within a few days at most, for as little cost as possible.

Everything else, when you’re starting out, is just noise. Tune it out.

Michael

P.S. You can get 30 days free to Aweber here:

Short. Sweet. And to the point.
I have been enlightened by you today.
    Thank you, Michael! 🙂
PS: And I’m going to be putting my energy into my mailing list rather than into my blog.

Thanks Phil. Focusing on the mailing list should always be the first port of call 🙂
