If you have a mailing list, this matters

Do you have a mailing list?

Do you email it regularly?

If so, today’s email’s going to be of interest to you.

Recently I’ve spent a lot of time thinking, and working, on how we email people. Both from a hardware and software perspective, as well as a copywriting perspective.

You need to have both working correctly if you want to get good deliverability.

Most folk use autoresponder services, a bit like the free one I’m going to be releasing in the very near future 😉

That means you don’t need to worry about the hardware and software side of it, someone else is doing the worrying for you.

But you’ll still need to worry about the copywriting side of it.

Your subject line is going to be the first thing that your readers are going to see.

The subject line will determine whether they open your email, and one thing’s for sure…

…if they don’t open your email they won’t be clicking on your links.

So you’d better get that subject line right.

But don’t worry if you don’t get it right every time!

Because you won’t.

I’ve been doing this nearly a decade and still don’t get it right every time.

If I look at all the emails I’ve sent so far in March, and that’s just two weeks worth of emails, my open rates have varied from 5.70% to 20.50% to the exact same list.

What’s affected this?

The subject line.

Of course, don’t forget open rates are kinda vague. If someone has images blocked, or the email provider hosts the images themselves, then their opens won’t count.

So you can always assume you’re getting more opens than shown on your open rate.

Anyhoo…

One thing we can be sure about is that click through rates will be accurate because it only counts them when someone actually clicks on a link.

So here’s the click percentage difference in my best and worst performing emails so far this month…

In the email that got a 5.70% open rate, I got a whopping 1.94% clicks.

Hold off the big guns.

In the email with a 20.50% open rate, I got a 12.73% click through.

Talk about a big difference.

That’s why the subject line is so important.

Enough talking, how am I going to give you the best opportunity to make your subject lines rock ‘n roll?
